United Nations University’s Mission: The United Nations University (UNU) is an international community of scholars, engaged in research, postgraduate teaching and capacity development and dissemination of knowledge in furthering the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations. For more information, please visitwww.unu.edu.
UNU-EHS : established in December 2003, addresses the risk and vulnerability aspects of human security and the consequences of complex environmental hazards for sustainable development. The work of UNU‐EHS helps to improve the in‐depth understanding of the cause effect relationships to find ways to reduce risks and vulnerabilities. The Institute supports policymakers and decision makers with evidence‐based research and information. www.ehs.unu.edu.
Environmental Vulnerability & Ecosystem Services (EVES) section: EVES explores environmental deterioration processes such as water and land degradation. Particularly, the section looks at remedial measures, resources availability and robustness of ecosystem services, all within the context of socio-ecological systems affected by environmental hazards.
The GLASCA Project, “Water Availability in Central Asia – Societal Vulnerability to Changing Glacier and Snowmelt Runoff Contributions to Central Asian Rivers (GlaSCA)”, aims at establishing an interdisciplinary research consortium uniting German and Central Asian scientists from different countries which will (1) address the quantification of the glacier and snowmelt contribution to river runoff in the region and (2) assess the societal vulnerability to changes in runoff amount and seasonal distribution.
Focusing on the catchment of the Ala-Archa River, located on the northern slopes of the Kyrgyz Range near Bishkek (Kyrgyzstan), GlaSCA quantifies the glacier melt, snowmelt, groundwater and rainfall contribution to river runoff and identifies potential changes in their temporal and spatial variability. Based on this information, the project aims to analyze the vulnerability of downstream communities and surrounding districts to changes in water availability and seasonal water distribution. Preliminary societal vulnerability indices will be derived, that can be applied for the assessment of global change impact on water resources in Central Asian countries.
Within the frame of the GLASCA project, UNU-EHS offers one internship position.
