Animal Production and Health Adviser, Food for Progress, Liberia

Land O’Lakes, Inc. International Development seeks an Animal Production and Health Adviser for the Food for Progress project in Monrovia, Liberia. The Animal Production and Health Adviser will provide technical leadership and over-sight of all capacity-building activities related to livestock husbandry, health, safe slaughtering and meat hygiene within the Land O'Lakes Liberia Food for Progress livestock sector development program.
The qualified candidate will be responsible for all goat importation, quarantine and distribution aspects of the project. S/He will work with a team of Field Extension Agents and local stakeholders to oversee the progress of all animal health and husbandry activities in relation to the project's work plan and performance monitoring criteria. S/he will also complete monthly reports and necessary technical and administrative reports upon request. This long term technical assistance program will spend at least 70% of their time working in rural locations with minimal infrastructure. The successful candidate must be willing to travel regionally overland and within the country for extended periods of time. The position runs through December 2015 with possibility of extension based upon performance and project funding. This position will report directly to the Chief of Party.
This position is budgeted until December 2015.
Qualifications:
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Animal husbandry (BVS, BVSc, BVetMed, DVM, VMD, etc.) degree from an accredited school;
  • Knowledge of animal nutrition, tropical animal health, population medicine, pathology, epidemiology, parasitology, bacteriology, pharmacology, and reproductive health;
  • Practical livestock management experience, preferably in West Africa;
  • Three years' experience as a trainer or consultant or animal health/husbandry practitioners in the livestock sector;
  • Prior experience in developing training curricula and materials;
  • Experience working in an international organization;
Preferred qualifications include:
  • Procurement of small ruminants including selection, quarantine, transport and distribution.
  • Goat husbandry for goat meat production;
  • Livestock trading and marketing;
  • Food safety, quality assurance systems and inspection for meat processing;
  • Livestock distribution schemes;
  • Smallholder small ruminant production;
  • Improved feeding practices for small ruminants, especially for browsing species;
  • Development and outreach through farmer associations (i.e. cooperatives, producer groups, marketing groups, etc);
