DEAN OF THE FACULTY OF ARTS AND SCIENCES

The American University of Beirut (AUB) invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences is one of the six faculties/schools that make up the American University of Beirut. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean is the responsible academic and executive head of the Faculty. Candidates must qualify for appointment to the rank of full professor in an appropriate discipline in the humanities, social sciences, or natural and quantitative sciences. The successful candidate will be a highly qualified and experienced academic leader with an extensive background at the university or equivalent levels and well-demonstrated academic and administrative competencies, strongly committed to the University’s research and teaching mission. S/he must have strong leadership skills; a demonstrable record of fostering excellence in research, teaching, and service; experience with strategic planning and program development; experience in academic administration, budget and personnel management; the skill to communicate effectively with internal and external constituencies; and the ability to raise funds in coordination with the President and the Senior Administration. S/he must be a demonstrated team leader and team player; and be committed to transparency in administrative procedures, to transformative research, education and service, and to responsive faculty governance.
Established in 1866, the Faculty of Arts and Sciences houses twenty eight academic departments, programs, and centers in three major areas of study: the humanities, the social sciences, and the natural and quantitative sciences. It offers undergraduate programs leading to bachelor’s degrees as well as graduate education leading to master’s degrees in most fields. It also offers graduate programs leading to the degrees of Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Arabic Language and Literature, Arab and Middle Eastern History, Cell and Molecular Biology, and Theoretical Physics. It has around 260 full-time and 180 part-time faculty and over 3,200 students from Lebanon and the region pursuing undergraduate and graduate degrees.
The Faculty of Arts and Sciences represents the core of the University and is its main gateway for higher studies and professional education.  It follows a liberal arts program that stresses freedom of academic choice, integrity, ethical conduct, equal opportunity and respect for diversity.
