Cambridge-Africa Programme Coordinator (THRiVE & MUII)

by Unknown  |  at  8:37 AM

We are seeking a highly motivated individual with a degree/equivalent experience in a relevant subject area, to provide coordination, organisational and administrative support for the Cambridge component of two Africa research capacity building programmes called MUII-plus (Makerere University/UVRI Centre of Excellence in Infection and Immunity Research and Training; http://www.muii.org.ug) and THRiVE-2 (Training Health Researchers into Vocational Excellence in East Africa; http://www.thrive.or.ug). Both Programmes are led from East Africa, are funded by the Wellcome Trust, and were initiated in 2008 and 2009 respectively. There are two Ugandan partners involved in MUII-plus, whereas THRiVE-2 has six East African institutions (in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda) as partners. Both programmes have Cambridge University as a key UK/international partner.
The role-holder will liaise with the Coordinators and Secretariats in the African partner institutions, as well as the Programme leaders in Cambridge, to identify and match Cambridge mentors with competitively-selected African researchers who will be offered two- (postdoctoral) or four-year (PhD) MUII-plus or THRiVE-2 fellowships. All fellows linked to Cambridge will have the opportunity to visit their mentors for periods of up to 12 months during their fellowships: to attend courses/lectures, and to develop and complete their research projects. Cambridge mentors can also make reciprocal visits to their mentee's African institution during the fellowship. The person appointed will therefore coordinate and support fellows' visits to Cambridge, and organise personal and professional training for them during their stay here. (S)he will also support the Cambridge mentors involved in the programmes throughout the collaborations, whether they are in Cambridge or visiting Africa. Furthermore, the Coordinator will facilitate collaboration and virtual interactions (e.g. live seminars via videoconference) between Cambridge and African partners, and will need to visit Africa for meetings at least once or twice a year.
Note: MUII-plus and THRiVE-2 are part of the multi-disciplinary, cross-School, Cambridge-Africa Programme (http://www.cambridge-africa.cam.ac.uk) at the University of Cambridge. Therefore, this Coordinator will work as a member of the Cambridge-Africa Programme team. (S)he will be expected to connect with other Coordinators of other Cambridge-Africa Programme initiatives, and be involved in the organisation of University-wide Cambridge-Africa activities and events. (S)he will report directly to the Cambridge-Africa Programme Manager, and indirectly to the Director as well as other members of the Cambridge-Africa leadership team.
Fixed-term: The funds for this post are available until 31st December 2020.
Working pattern: Full-time. Working hours will be agreed prior to appointment.
Interviews will take place on 10th May 2016.
Once an offer of employment has been accepted, the successful candidate will be required to undergo a health assessment.
