The UCL Institute of Advanced Studies (IAS) provides an environment organised by issues of global significance and themes of cross-disciplinary interest, and houses existing and new research centres (see: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/institute-of-advanced-studies ). The project seeks to critically evaluate the history of what is viewed as an ‘epidemic’ of chronic and non-communicable diseases in sub-Saharan Africa. The project seeks to provide an historical account of the evolution of chronic and non-communicable diseases in Africa, going beyond a simple account of ‘transition’, and to contribute to wider debates on the nature of epidemiological change. It also seeks to interrogate the medical and institutional construction of ‘chronic diseases’ and ‘NCDs’ within the context of specific political economies and to investigate patients’ understandings of these conditions.
