The multidisciplinary Institute of Development Policy and Management (IOB) is looking for a full-time:
Tenure track academic staff in the area of “State, Economy and Society in Africa”
Job description
- You expand the scientific research and outreach of the Institute in the area of development processes, actors and policies. You focus on the research line on interplay of state, economy and society and on the whole spectrum of formal and informal actors who contribute to the dynamics of power within and around the State. You are also invited to contribute to other research lines at IOB.
- You focus, among others, on the Great Lakes Region of Africa, in collaboration with colleagues at IOB and at IOB’s partner institutes in this region.
- You are responsible for lecturing duties to the interdisciplinary Master Programmes at IOB, among others concerning (quantitative,qualitative and/or mixed) research methods and within the framework of the Master module “governance and development”.
- You acquire and manage external funding (national and international).
- You supervise doctoral students.
- You act as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research in cooperation with members of the research group and other research groups of the University, for instance within the field of multi-level governance.
- You strengthen the network of contacts of the Institute with development actors at the international level and in the South. This includes teaching duties in partner institutes in the South.
- You are a team-player, performing tasks of a public goods nature at the level of the Institute and the University, and society at large.
Profile and requirements
- You hold a doctorate degree (PhD) in development studies or related social science disciplines.
- Your work is preferably interdisciplinary in nature and preferably engages with a mixture of methodological approaches.
- You have several years of postdoctoral experience or equivalent.
- You have an international academic CV and perform qualitatively outstanding academic research, as witnessed by publications in top journals in the fields related to processes of state formation and their development and poverty implications in the global south.
- The focus in your teaching corresponds to the educational vision of the university.
- Your academic qualities comply with the requirements stipulated in the university’s policy.
- You have leadership skills (or the potential to develop them).
- You are quality-oriented, conscientious, creative and cooperative.
- You have an excellent knowledge of English. Knowledge of French is a plus.
- You must acquire Dutch (CEFR- level B2) within 3 years. The University of Antwerp provides support.
- You must prove your knowledge of the English language (CEFR-level C1) according to your teaching assignment. The University of Antwerp provides support.
We offer commensurate with the experience and the academic qualifications
- either a full-time position as a lecturer, in a temporary appointment (tenure track for five years.) that can lead to a tenured position as senior lecturer;
- or a full-time position as a senior lecturer or higher, generally with tenure;
- date of appointment: 1 October 2016;
- a gross monthly salary ranging from € 4.009,52 - € 7.213,07;
