SOAS, University of London is the world’s leading institution for the study of Asia, Africa and the Middle East, offering programmes in arts, humanities, languages, law and social sciences. Inaugurated in June 1916, SOAS has had an international reach since the arrival of its first students in February 1917 and is celebrating its Centenary in 2016. We uniquely combine language scholarship, disciplinary expertise and regional focus, and have the largest concentration in Europe of academic staff concerned with these specialisms.
In response to a period of growth in student numbers, the Centre for Gender Studies wishes to appoint a Lecturer or Senior Lecturer who has the capacity to make a substantial contribution to the core courses on gender theory and sexuality. Candidates will be required to have specialist knowledge of the study of gender and/or the study of sexuality with application to any of the SOAS regions. The capacity to develop a curriculum that challenges Western gender theories would be of particular interest. The Centre has a particular need for expertise in the study of gender and/or sexuality in relation to Africa; although candidates with regional expertise from any areas within Asia, Africa and/or the Middle East and/or their diasporas will be considered.
Candidates will be required to demonstrate teaching, research and administrative skills relevant to the post applied (see application pack), as well as capacity to work effectively in a team environment. The Centre has a record of innovative teaching and research outputs that it hopes to further enhance through the appointment of a specialist scholar that consolidates the Centre’s core teaching strengths, while expanding regional focus of the Centre staff and Centre members.
