Org. Setting and Reporting
This position is located in the Public Information Section in the United Nations Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) in Goma. The incumbent will report to the Chief Multimedia.
Responsibilities
Within delegated authority, the Photographer will be responsible for the following duties
  • Provide principal photographic coverage and documentation of the Mission's activities, and liaise with the Military, Police and Civilian units in order to achieve this end.
  • Identify and carry out photographic assignments within the Mission's area of operations and provide written information describing the coverage.
  • Conceive, prepare proposals, write, photograph, edit and assist in the design of specific print/web/digital photo montages for use by the Public Information Office (PIO) as well as other substantive units of the Mission and UN Department of Public Information (DPI).
  • Ensure the best quality of photographic products.
  • Edit and archive photographs with specific data information for storage at Mission HQ.
  • Provide UN DPI Photo Library with images of the Mission's activities.
  • Work closely with the Mission's Newsletter Editor and Webmaster, providing supportive imagery for their specific publications and products.
  • To undertake any other photography-related assignments, but not limited to, photo editing, photo research, maintenance and update of Missions' Photo Archive and perform digital post production and photo processing tasks.
  • Provide Mission stock images, liaison services, as well as technical support to international and local media organizations.
  • Assist in building capacity in regard to technical proficiency in local media.
  • Be responsible for photo equipment, issued by the Mission, for inventory and maintenance purposes.
  • Assist in the creation and procurement of equipment infrastructure of the Mission's photographic unit.

Education
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
Work Experience
  • At least 6 years of progressively responsible experience in the field of photography.
  • Electronic/computer-based editing and design experience and the ability to work independently are necessary.
  • Additional training/work experience in the field of photography in developing nations and/or post conflict situations with the UN, other international organizations, or NGOs is desirable.
Languages
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat.
  • For this position, fluency in oral and written French is required.
  • Working knowledge of English is desirable.
Assessment Method
Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
