Education Specialist, Reducing Child Labor in Malawi
Effective with the release of this position announcement, Winrock International is recruiting applicants for the position of Education Specialist for an upcoming child labor elimination program in Malawi. The responsibilities, duties, and qualifications are described in the attached position description. Position is contingent upon receipt of donor funding.

Position Description
POSITION TITLE: Education Specialist, Child Labor Elimination Program
LOCATION: Malawi
DEPARTMENT: Empowerment & Civic Engagement
REPORTS TO: Project Director, Child Labor Elimination Program
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Education Specialist will provide leadership in developing the technical aspects of education interventions for children withdrawn or at risk of participating in exploitative and hazardous child labor in Malawi. Organizing and leading teacher training, as well as working closely with public schools to improve learning outcomes are also key components of this position Additionally he/she will be responsible for awareness campaigns targeting parents, communities, and government officials. Position is contingent upon receipt of donor funding.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The Education Specialist will oversee the implementation of the program’s education activities and coordinate reporting requirements. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:
· Assessment of existing education system for gaps.
· Managing and leading school assessments.
· Adaptation and development of formal and non-formal basic education curricula in collaboration with government officials.
· Developing community-driven systems for identifying and enrolling into school child laborers or those at risk of child labor.
· Designing and delivering teacher training on curricula as well as child labor awareness and special education needs of withdrawn and at-risk child laborers.
· Designing and delivering a community child labor awareness and prevention campaign.
· Designing interventions for increasing government action to prevent child labor and improve education alternatives.
· Managing staff in the field and overseeing education activities such as scholarship distribution and school improvement initiatives.
· Serving as Deputy Project Director, assisting the Project Director with administrative and personnel management.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s level degree or higher in education or other social science.
Work Experience:
· Minimum 3 years of professional experience in a technical role in implementation of child labor and/or complex basic education programs in developing countries such as: educational assessment of disadvantaged students; teacher training; educational materials development; educational management; monitoring and evaluation of basic education projects; education policy; educational quality and access improvement; and development of community participation in the improvement of basic education for disadvantaged children.
· Knowledge of exploitative child labor issues and experience in the development of formal, non-formal and vocational education programs for children removed from exploitative child labor and worst forms of child labor.
· Extensive experience in working successfully with ministries of education, networks of educators, employers’ organizations, and trade union representatives or comparable entities.
· Additional experience with education policy and monitoring and evaluation is an asset.
· Programmatic experience highly desired in gender, human trafficking, HIV/AIDS, child labor, and/or public health issues.
· Experience with US Dept. of Labor or other donor-funded programs to reduce child labor desirable.
Skills: Excellent written and oral communication skills in English required. Proficiency in Chichewa preferred.
