BACKGROUND INFORMATION
The Media and Communications Division (MCD) of IOM is comprised of experienced communications professionals based in Geneva as well as Washington, Bangkok and Manila. The team provides advice and support on media and public information issues to IOM Headquarters and missions worldwide. It is responsible for media relations as well as producing a variety of other public information materials, including official statements to mark special events, information folders, fact sheets and press briefing notes on specific IOM activities.
SUPERVISION
The Intern will work under the guidance and supervision of the Head of the Division and in cooperation with other colleagues in the Field Missions and IOM Headquarters.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Under the supervision of the Head of MCD, the Intern will focus on supporting the timely and professional presentation of communications outputs to the media, general public and internally within IOM. These materials include press releases and briefing notes, photographs from the field, infographics, flyers, presentations and video.
The Intern will have the following duties and responsibilities:
- Support strategic planning and development of various communications materials including but not limited to newsletters, flyers, multimedia products and communications guidelines
- Assist in the development and dissemination of social media outreach and support IOM missions in developing media outputs to increase the overall digital footprint of the agency
- Assist in preparing media activities and public information for key thematic events including UN international days, social media campaigns, and other media projects
- Provide support for media and communications trainings, staff presentations and integration of two-way communications in relevant IOM projects
- Coordinate the editorial content, presentation and distribution of ‘IOM in the news’ and regular online newsletters
- Undertake any other tasks as requested by the Head and colleagues of MCD.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
• Previous experience in media and communications; • Background in writing and reporting in international contexts; • Strong organizational skills; • Ability to timely understand the Organization’s structure and portfolios; • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously in a team of colleagues of varied cultural and professional backgrounds; • Proven ability to produce quality work accurately and concisely according to set deadlines; • Practical experience of how to multi-task, prioritize and work independently; • Excellent knowledge of spoken and written English; working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is highly desirable
