Dairy Value Chain Expert/ Team Leader

Background
SNV Kenya provides capacity strengthening to local organizations (private, public or NGO) engaged in work for poverty reduction. SNV has been shortlisted for a tender that requires an international Team Leader to work as a Dairy Value Chain Expert and Team Leader if the project would be awarded to SNV.
The global project on "Green Innovation Centres in the agri-food sector" is part of the global BMZ special initiative "A WORLD without hunger" and aims to improve the income of small farms, promote employment and to provide food security.
In the centre of the strategy is the introduction and diffusion of innovations in agricultural value chains, both at the level of agricultural producers and cooperatives, the supply companies, the marketing and processing industries.
The objective of this project is to promote innovation in the milk value chain. The Project areas are three counties namely Siaya, Kakamega and Bungoma in Western Kenya.
Position Summary
The International Dairy Value Chain Expert/Team Leader will be a seasoned professional who can lead a team that can upscale dairy innovations in an environment whose players include international and private sector companies, farmer's organizations and the public sector. Specifically, the position holder will have the following key responsibilities which will help deliver on the key project indicators.
Key Responsibilities
- Increase in the income of small farms through sales of products within the milk value chain in the project counties;
- Increased Employment creation in the milk value chain for youth and women
- Increase productivity of small holder farmers
- Strengthening of the value chain actors' milk to ensure sustainable structural change (advocacy, policy influencing)
- Ensure partnerships for promoting innovation in the milk value chain at national, regional and / or global level.
- Introduction and dissemination of technical, organizational and economic innovations among the various actors in the value chain of milk.
- Improving access of the target group to education and training and to guidance in all aspects of the milk value chain, with a particular focus on gender issues and youth development.
- Strengthening of organizations in the dairy supply chain, in particular enhance the interest groups of smallholder producers and producers.
- Promote start-ups along the dairy supply chain with a special focus on women and the young generation.
- Promotion of innovation networks for the WSK milk on German, European and international level.
- Deliver ICT-based solutions in the context of value chains.
Candidate Profile
- Master degree in agricultural economics, general agriculture, agribusiness or marketing or relevant related discipline.
- At least 12 years of practical experience in project management especially in (dairy) value chains (past experience with GIZ and Capacity WORKS will be an advantage)
- Experience in private sector development, promotion of start-ups
- Experience in management of vocational education and training;
- Experience in development of innovation platforms;
- Experience in cooperation management with German and international agriculture and food industries;
- Good management experience in complex projects and M & E skills;
- Sound knowledge in the field of gender and youth as well as in the use of ICT.
- Proven experience in Germany as well as East Africa or comparable countries.
Other requirements
- Experience in establishing and running an project office organization (HR, Finance, Admin)
- (People) management, training and coaching experience and leadership skills
- Extensive work experience in a multicultural environment
- Good communication skills in English (German and some knowledge of Kiswahili is an advantage)
- Good computer skills
- Willingness to travel to project regions in Kenya
Contract Duration:
2.5 years with possibility of extension
Desired start date:
Once the project is confirmed probably around June/July
