Malaria Communication Consultant

HC3 plans to work with both in Nigeria and globally to develop a communication intervention that protects consumers, vendors, and the public health sector from substandard and falsified malaria drugs

The role of the consultant will be to assist with the development of a communication strategy for the communication campaign in Nigeria, to prepare a detailed workplan for its implementation, to manage the implementation of the workplan, including the development and testing of communication materials, liaising with NAFDAC, National Malaria Elimination Programme, and other partners, and conducting orientations and training for stakeholders, and champions.  HC3 will provide backstopping support and technical assistance through the HC3 Field Coordinator for this activity, who is based in Uganda. The consultancy is a 5-month part time position, with the possibility of extension.  Specific activities include:

1.       Familiarize self with SSFFC Landscaping document, relevant research reports and documents, and HC3 Concept Note.

2.       Organize meeting of key stakeholders to flesh out a communication strategy to address SSFFC in Nigeria.

3.       Assist with workshop planning, which may include any or all of the following:

a.       Designing the workshop agenda

b.      Developing an invitation list

c.       Preparing materials for use during the workshop

d.      Working with HC3 staff to prepare supplies, venue, and other workshop logistics

4.       Co-facilitate a strategy design workshop, which may include any or all of the following:

a.       Co-facilitating sessions as necessary

b.      Managing workshop logistics

c.       Taking notes during sessions and typing up contents of small group work

d.      Creating a report of the workshop that is a compilation of notes, the final agenda, all presentations, a list of participants, and any other necessary items

5.       Draft communication strategy based on workshop deliberations; share with stakeholders and incorporate any necessary changes

6.       Prepare a detailed workplan and budget for implementation of the communication strategy

7.       Identify and work with HC3 staff to contract vendors or consultants to develop communication materials, including translations to local languages

8.       Liaise with key government and non-governmental stakeholders as well as PMI to review all materials

9.       Design, organize, and analyse pretesting of communication materials among intended audiences and prepare a report with recommendations

10.   Prepare dissemination plans for communication materials and work with HC3 staff to contract vendors to place materials according to that plan

11.   Monitor dissemination of materials, and prepare monthly reports during dissemination

12.   Design and organize orientations to the campaign for partners, service providers, media representatives, and others as indicated in the communication strategy.

13.   Update HC3, PMI, USAID, NAFDAC, National Malaria Programme and other stakeholders about the campaign as it roles out.  This may be done through a blog as well as periodic meetings.

Qualifications:

Masters in public health or equivalent and 4 years experience in health communication.  Candidates with more than 4 years experience in health communication and an undergraduate degree in health, communication or social science may also be considered.
Demonstrated understanding of the theories of behaviour change communication
Experience working on malaria programmes/projects in Nigeria.
Experience developing health communication strategies and materials
Excellent organizational and writing skills
Resident of Nigeria
Fluent in spoken and written English.
