Background:

The International Rescue Committee has been working in Somalia since 2006, providing essential services to conflict and disaster-affected communities. The IRC has been operational in South Central (Mudug, Galgadud, Banadir and Nugaal) regions of Somalia, implementing interventions in the areas of Livelihood, WASH and Health, GBV, Governance and Rights reaching out to more than 200,000 conflict and drought-affected population in these regions.
Scope of Work
The Midwife is directly responsible to the Medical Officer and will carry out the following duties:
Programming
  • Ensure that all required observations, prescribed treatment and procedures are properly carried out and documented on patient's charts or cards.
  • Examines patients during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results and patient's statements to evaluate condition and ensure patient's progress is normal.
  • Provide medical care and treatment to obstetrical patients under supervision of the medical doctor, delivers babies and instructs patients in prenatal and postnatal health practices.
  • Stays with the patient during labor to reassure and administer medication. Performs deliveries and postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient and infant are responding normally.
  • Observes universal safety and hygiene procedures during delivery to ensure adequate patient outcome. When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy or delivery, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of the medical doctor.
  • Visits patients during postpartum period in health center and provides instructions in care of self and infant.
  • Maintain record of cases for inclusion in patients' files.
  • Participates in and provides training to other staff.
  • Discuss cases with the medical doctor to assure observation of specified practices and establish a compassionate environment by providing emotional and psychological support to patients and patients' relatives.
  • Maintain safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
  • Arrange and submit weekly work schedule and plan daily duties and responsibilities in collaboration with other nurses and medical officer in charge.
  • Attend monthly/weekly health center meetings.
  • Do health center coverage on-call as required.
Reporting and Communication
  • Maintain and submit nursing supplies inventory by checking stock to determine inventory level, anticipating needed supplies and placing orders for drugs and supplies.
  • Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops and participating in Continuous Medical Education sessions and other training.
  • Participates in health education for patients and families to provide information concerning pregnancy and child birth.
  • Compile and submit monthly reports.
  • Monitor and supervise proper usage of supplies.
Operations
  • Maintain equipment in good condition and submit regular inventory report of the same.
  • Maintain patient confidence by keeping information confidential
  • Report any significant changes in operations to the medical officer.
  • Carry out any other additional duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.
