Introduction/ Background
AU-IBAR is implementing a 5-year project on "Strengthening the Capacity of African Countries to Conservation and Sustainable Utilisation of African Animal Genetic Resources", which supports the implementation of the Global Plan of Action (GPA) for Animal Genetic Resources (AnGR) in Africa, in line with the current AU-IBAR strategy.
In this context, AU-IBAR wants to formulate Guidelines and Regional Strategies for the sustainable utilization of selected transboundary breeds of livestock in Africa (West, East, Central, Northern and Southern) so as to reduce the risk of their extinction and enhance their contribution to regional food security, and biodiversity conservation.
Furtherance to the above, it is proposed to conduct five (5) Regional Experts Consultative meetings that brings together stakeholders to further reflect on the regional strategies for the utilization of selected transboundary breeds.
Description of Tasks
- Prepare an issue paper on the sustainable utilization and conservation strategy and key principles for successful conservation/selection programs targeting selected transboundary breeds of livestock that will inform the meeting and the discussions;
- Facilitate a 3-day workshop i.e. identification of speakers, guiding the discussions;
- Produce the final regional documents on:
- Regional strategy for conservation of selected transboundary breed;
- Harmonized guidelines for conservation/selection programs targeting of selected transboundary breeds of livestock.
Qualifications
- Postgraduate degree in Agriculture-Livestock Management, NRM Expert/Technical or other relevant degree;
- More than 5 years of professional experience in AnGR management, experience in international policy making and negotiations;
- Solid understanding of the national, regional livestock, agricultural policies, regulations, planning and investment process for the management and development of AnGR in Africa;
- Experience in facilitating stakeholders consultations;
- Fluency in English and/or French;
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with people of different cultures and professional backgrounds.
Remuneration
The total duration of the service for the technical resource person is 20 days, each at a daily rate of USD 300. It includes 7 days to prepare the issue paper, 3 facilitation of the meeting, 10 days to produce the final regional document. No fees during travel days but DSA, full DSA at workshop location aligned with UN-DSA rates.
Selection of the Proposals
