About
The New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene will be launching an initiative to “End the AIDS” epidemic in New York City (NYC). This initiative seeks to bring the number of persons newly diagnosed with HIV down from approximately 2800 per year to 600 per year by 2020. Once that level of new infections is reached, the number of people dying from HIV due to natural causes will exceed the number of people newly infected each year, progressively reducing the number of people with HIV in NYC. Additionally, HIV surveillance data reveal clear disparities in HIV morbidity and mortality and as such, the DOHMH is committed to programming that focuses on achieving health equity. As such, major components of the “End the AIDS” epidemic initiative include: a) expanding delivery of HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP), and treatment medications to eligible clients, b) working with community organizations to expand delivery of PrEP, PEP, and treatment medications at their facilities, c) working with special populations, such as people of color, men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender people, to improve access to healthcare and d) enhancing surveillance and linkage to care of newly diagnosed HIV infected persons.
