Organizational Summary
As part of the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) is at the nexus of practice, policy and learning in peacebuilding and human rights. The institute works in the field with local partner organizations in conflict-affected countries, bringing together civil society, governments, the security sector and human rights advocates to address the inequalities that fuel conflict to find paths to sustainable peace. Through dialogue, training in conflict resolution, negotiations and policy advocacy, the institute encourages local communities to come together and take the lead in preventing and ending cycles of violence.
Position Summary
The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) Field Programs team is seeking a part-time intern to assist with new media and design. This intern will support IPJ’s strategic peacebuilding work through documentation, design, graphic creation and the development of compelling, informative multi-media content. Working alongside a small, dedicated team of peacebuilders, this intern will assist in developing new storytelling techniques and messaging to help raise the voices of the individuals and communities the IPJ works with and document the impact of the Institute’s work globally. This position is ideal for someone with a digital media/design background and a desire to learn how to mobilize these skills to support peace with justice.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Assist in the creative process for developing new communication and messaging strategies
- Assist with the development of a consistent communication theme
- Design documents (such as reports, curriculum, case studies) for print and digital publication
- Create infographics and images for print and digital publication
- Edit images and create other visual products to share on social media
- Assist with staff training to facilitate and manage online content
- Assist in organizing and consolidating photos and videos from IPJ’s field projects
- Research and compile information on current events in program countries
- Support program staff with logistical and administrative support
- Undertake other duties broadly in-line with the above tasks as needed
This unpaid internship will be 20 hours per week in the IPJ offices. Hours worked are flexible to accommodate a student schedule.
Qualifications:
- Demonstrated knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite (e.g. Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator)
- Experience in graphic design
- Familiarity with a range of social media platforms (Facebook, Twitter etc.)
- Strong interest in peacebuilding and human rights
- Interest in and knowledge of program countries (e.g. Nepal, Cambodia, and Kenya)
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail
- Creative self-starter with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team
- Experience in video editing/production is a plus but not required

- Design Sample– 2-3 samples of your design work. One piece can be video or multimedia.
- Two to three references, at least one of which must be a professor. Names of references can be included on CV. (Note: Actual letters of reference are not required; however the IPJ may contact your references via email or telephone.)
- Original transcripts – unofficial web transcript(s) submitted with application (if selected, you will be asked to provide an official transcript) from each college or university attended.
