Interpreter/Translator, IT Manager & Bilingual Secretary

The Council for the Development of Social Science Research in Africa (CODESRIA) invites applications to fill the following vacancies within the Secretariat:

1. Interpreter/Translator 
2. IT Manager
3. Bilingual Secretary

• Good interpersonal and communication skills,
• Ability to work in a multi- cultural environment with sensitivity and respect to diversity,
• Ability to work with minimum supervision, and,
• Have a good knowledge of English or French and an ability to communicate in the other.
• Translate official letters/correspondences/ documents from French to English and vice versa;
• Proofread and approve externally-translated documents before they are submitted to programmes, and,
• Undertake any other tasks assigned to him/her by the Executive Secretary.
• Excellent written and spoken English and French,
• Minimum of five (5) consecutive years of experience in translation and interpretation in a similar institution,
• Troubleshoot the hardware, software and network systems;
• Provide orientation/training to users of the information technology;
• Maintain current and accurate inventory of technology hardware, software and resources in CODESRIA;
• Help in hiring and managing information systems personnel and contractors to design, develop, implement, operate and administer computer and telecommunications software, networks and information systems;
• Design and manage web services, including social media applications and discussion forums, and,
• Undertake any other IT-related tasks that are important to CODESRIA.
• Have at least eight (8) years of working experience in a similar organisation.
• Draft responses to routine correspondences for the signature of the Executive Secretary;
• Receive guests/visitors/staff and provide them with basic information on relevant issues and procedures;
• Maintain a proper filing and recording system for all incoming and outgoing correspondences and documents;
• Answer and screen telephone calls/e-mail messages and ensure follow-up with the Executive Secretary;
• Keep an up-to-date diary of appointments for the Executive Secretary;
• Provide day-to-day routine administrative support to various work units of the assigned programmes/departments/Units, and
• Undertake any other task assigned to him/her by the Executive Secretary.
• A higher qualification will be an added advantage;
• Typing speed : a minimum of 50 words per minutes;
• Excellent secretarial and office management skills, and
• A minimum of 5 years of relevant working experience.
• Good knowledge of the workings of international organisations;
• Capacity to work under pressure and in a multicultural environment;
• Excellent computer experience in using Microsoft office applications;
• Good planning and organisational skills;
• Efficient and well organized personality and
• Demonstrable ability to work to tight deadlines.

Responsibilities and expectations
Under the overall authority of the Executive Secretary and the direct supervision of the Programmes and Departments concerned, the employees will be expected to contribute actively and significantly to the day-to-day management of CODESRIA’s programmes that fall within their portfolio. They will also be required to play key roles in enhancing the quality of the Council’s programmes and activities for which they have been recruited.

The candidates must possess:

1. Interpreter/Translator (English-French)
Under the overall supervision of The Director of Administration and Finance, the incumbent will serve as an Interpreter/Translator to support the activities of CODESRIA.
a. He/She will be required to:
• Provide interpretation from French into English and vice versa during trainings, workshops, meetings, field visits and research activities; 
b. Academic/Technical Competencies/Qualifications:
• Diploma in translation or university degree in languages (English and French),

2. IT Manager
Under the overall supervision of the Head of Programmes, CODESRIA Documentation and Information Centre (CODICE), the IT Manager will be providing IT support to CODESRIA’s activities.
He/or she will be required to:
• Manage the information technology and systems of CODESRIA; 
Academic/Technical Competencies/Qualifications:
• Have a master’s degree or equivalent qualifications in computer science, information technology/science, or other and,

3. Bilingual secretary
Under the overall supervision of the Executive Secretary, the incumbent will serve as a bilingual secretary providing secretarial and office administrative/management duties for the Office of the Executive Secretary.
a. She/he will be required to:
• Type and proofread documents, reports, correspondences, messages, queries, etc. as may be required by assigned supervisors; 
b. Academic/Technical Competencies/Qualifications:
• A minimum of bachelor’s degree or an equivalent of a bachelor’s degree in English, plus an advanced certificate in Secretarial Studies; 
c. Other Relevant Skills:
• Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; 

4. Operating conditions
The level of remuneration will depend on the experience and qualifications of the candidates. However, CODESRIA offers good remuneration similar to those in international organizations.
