General introduction:

The following are eligible to apply:

- ILO Internal candidates in accordance with paragraphs 31 and 32 of Annex I of the Staff Regulations.

Staff members with at least five years of continuous service with the Office are encouraged to apply and will be given special consideration at the screening and evaluation stage.

In accordance with the Staff Regulations and letters of appointment, successful candidates for positions in the Professional category would be expected to take up different assignments (field and Headquarters) during their career, the desirable length of an assignment in any specific position being two to five years, following which the incumbent should be willing to move to another assignment and/or duty station.

The specific language requirements for this position are detailed hereunder. Candidates whose mother tongue is not one of the ILO working languages (English, French and Spanish) shall possess a fully satisfactory working knowledge of at least one of the working languages in order to apply. If appointed, and if so required as per the position requirements, they may be required to acquire a working knowledge of a second working language during their initial years of service in the Office.

INTRODUCTION
The Senior Translator/Reviser positions are located within the French Language Unit of the Official Documentation Branch (OFFDOC/F), in the Relations, Meetings and Document Services Department (RELMEETINGS). OFFDOC/F is responsible for translating into French (mainly from English and Spanish) all official ILO documents, including those submitted to the International Labour Conference, the Governing Body, regional and sectoral meetings and documents produced by the Office of the ILO Director-General. The unit also edits and formats such documents.

The positions report to the Head of Unit of OFFDOC/F.
Description of Duties
Specific duties

1. Translate or revise texts on the broad range of technical subject areas dealt with by the International Labour Organization and administrative, financial or legal documents, which may be particularly sensitive and complex.

2. Supervise and train translators (permanent and temporary staff and external collaborators) with a view to refining their skills, and coordinate certain team translation projects. Evaluate performance and the quality of work, follow up and make recommendations to the Head of Unit.

3. Participate in major ILO meetings as team leader, reviser or translator, both at headquarters and in the field (International Labour Conference, Governing Body, and regional and sectoral meetings), taking on a heavy workload with tight deadlines on such occasions.

4. Liaise with author units and other units involved in document production, including colleagues from other language units, to harmonize the translation in the various languages. Conduct supplementary research to resolve problems of terminology and meaning, and consult with substantive units regarding possible inconsistencies or errors in the original text.

5. Keep abreast of developments in computer-assisted translation and technology tools (CATT tools) in order to promote their use within the unit.

6. Where a document has been drafted in French, edit the original version in order to establish the master text to be followed by the other relevant language units.

7. Stand in for the Head of Unit in his or her absence, and undertake any other duties which may be assigned.

These specific duties are aligned with the relevant ILO generic job description, which in this case includes the following generic duties:

1. Revise in the target language, from two or more source languages, translations prepared by other staff and by external translators.

2. Translate, from two languages, and self-revise especially complex and technical texts for issuance without further revision.

3. Edit texts in the target language to ensure a style of presentation in conformity with ILO standards.

4. Produce versions in the target language which are, in terms of accuracy, completeness, meaning, style and effectiveness, the equivalent of the original text.

5. Carry out linguistic research and prepare terminological bulletins and glossaries and other reference tools.

6. May be called on to organize and coordinate the work of other translators of the same language unit, monitoring the progress of work in relation to an agreed schedule or coordinating the work for simultaneous issuance before or during a meeting.
Required Qualifications
Education
Advanced university degree in languages or another relevant field, or the equivalent in experience.
Experience
At least seven years of professional experience in translation, at least three of which at the international level as a reviser or self-revising translator.

Excellent command of French. Good knowledge of English and Spanish. A sound knowledge of other official languages of the Organization (Russian, German, Chinese, Arabic) is considered advantageous.
Competencies 
In addition to the ILO core competencies, this position requires:

Technical competencies - Ability to use the most appropriate range of vocabulary and professional, scientific or technical concepts and terms. A high degree of knowledge and understanding of a broad range of subjects. Excellent translation skills and excellent drafting ability in the official's mother tongue. Proven revision ability. Good knowledge of the specialized subject matter dealt with by the Organization. Ability to plan and organize work. Ability to present information clearly and comprehensibly. Knowledge of and experience in using information technology, including word processing and database software, and ability to use computer-based terminological and information tools. Demonstrated experience in the use of CATT tools (such as MultiTrans). Ability to guide and train lower-level staff. Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. Ability to work on his or her own initiative as well as a member of a team. Sound knowledge of research techniques for translators and ability to harness Internet resources efficiently.

The ability to work in a multicultural environment and gender-sensitive behaviour and attitudes are also required. 
Additional Information:
Evaluation (which may include one or several written tests and a pre-interview competency-based assessment centre) and the interviews will tentatively take place between May and August 2015. APPENDIX II CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
- Any appointment/extension of appointment is subject to ILO Staff Regulations and other relevant internal rules.
- The first contract will be issued for a twelve-month period (for Geneva-based positions) and a twenty-four month period (for non Geneva-based positions)
- A successful external candidate will be on probation for the first two years of assignment.
- Any extension of contract beyond the probation period is subject to satisfactory conduct and performance.

Please note that the above salary levels are determined according to the criteria established by the International Civil Service Commission. The ILO is international public sector employer and salary and other employment conditions are not negotiable.

Other allowances and benefits subject to specific terms of appointment:
  • Children's allowance (except for the first child if the dependent rate of salary is paid in respect of that child);
  • Children's education grant (per child per year);

  • 30 working days' annual leave;

Salaries and emoluments are exempt from taxation by the Swiss authorities and, on the basis of international agreements or national law relating to presence or residence abroad, are generally exempt from taxation by other governments. In the absence of exemption, in most cases tax paid will be reimbursed in accordance with an ILO document which will be supplied upon request.

While the successful candidate will be initially working in Geneva, he/she may be assigned to any duty station designated by the Director-General of the ILO.
