ABA ROLI is a non-profit program that implements legal reform programs in over 60 countries around the world. ABA ROLI has nearly 700 professional staff working abroad and in its Washington, D.C. office. ABA ROLI’s host country partners include judges, lawyers, bar associations, law schools, court administrators, legislatures, ministries of justice and a wide array of civil society organizations, including human rights groups.
JOB SUMMARY
Based in D.C., this position leads the Africa regional division of the American Bar Association Rule of Law Initiative (ABA ROLI), and is responsible for a large, dynamic, and growing portfolio of overseas rule of law development programs in that region.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Working closely with the program’s oversight bodies, this position is responsible for all aspects of the organization’s work in the Sub-Saharan Africa region and has overall responsibility for management of headquarters-based and field-based staff.
The Director develops and is responsible for:
- Implementing the strategic vision in the Africa region;
- Identifying and obtaining funding for programs;
- Engaging in donor relations;
- Overseeing preparation of funding proposals and budgets;
- Implementation of programs and compliance with programmatic and financial requirements;
- Coordinating activities and programs with other entities working in the field;
- Developing and implementing activities to publicize work in the region; and
- Participation as a member of the ABA ROLI Senior Staff, providing input to organization-wide leadership and direction of the organization.
This position requires extensive overseas travel, often to countries lacking in amenities.
QUALIFICATIONS
- J.D. or equivalent graduate degree and 10 years relevant experience required, including experience in international development program design and management;
- Experience managing staff, including managing remote, field-based, and diverse teams;
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English and French;
- Experience living in and working in the Africa region, and deep understanding of current issues relating to human rights and rule of law development in the region;
- Experience managing U.S. government-funded rule of law development programs is preferred.
