Central African Republic: Election Coverage Journalism Trainer

BACKGROUND:
Internews and its local partner, the Association of Journalists for Human Rights (le Réseau des Journalistes pour les Droits de l’Homme –RJDH), have worked very closely in recent years to connect and support a unique network of 13 community radio stations and a Community Radio Correspondents Network (CRCN) through a Production Center in Bangui run by the RJDH.
Since the beginning of the current crisis in December 2012, the RJDH has consistently reported on the conflict, the ensuing humanitarian crisis and efforts towards reconciliation, political reconstruction, notably through national dialogue and preparations for elections.
RJDH produces a daily newsletter as well as daily and weekly radio programs in French and Sango broadcast across the country through the community radio station network.
The program is currently focused on providing conflict- and gender- sensitive non-partisan information to support peaceful participation of citizens in the election process scheduled to take place between now and the end of the year.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Internews trainers have continued to work with RJDH and partner community radios to promote and maintain professional standards for their outputs with particular emphasis on conflict sensitive, gender-based and citizen interactive journalism. The current political context necessitates focused training and training of trainers in preparation for a constitutional referendum and general elections scheduled for December 2015
The Election Coverage Journalism Trainer will provide formal training-of- trainers workshops for Internews and RJDH trainers, training and mentoring for print journalists and partner radio staff on coverage of election processes from civic education and election information, through campaign coverage to voting day and results.
Under the supervision of the Project Director, s/he will ensure that best training methods and professional practices in this field remain firmly embedded in activities beyond this two month consultancy.
​QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Fluency in spoken and written French and English.
  • Extensive experience in journalism training and mentoring
  • Proven track record in training trainers on all aspects of reporting on election processes
  • Extensive experience working (i.e. reporting, training…) in crises and election contexts, preferably in Sub-Saharan French- speaking Africa. Previous experience in CAR will be an asset.
  • Fluency in use of digital field recording equipment, basic studio equipment and software, such as Adobe Audition and/or CoolEdit Pro.
  • Sensitivity to cross-cultural dynamics in the work place.
  • Ability to work collaboratively as part of a team in a challenging and a highly fluid environment with shifting political circumstances.
  • Good interpersonal and networking skills to liaise authoritatively with a wide range of figures from government institutions, political parties, civil society,local media etc
  • An understanding of the vision/mission, core values and objectives of Internews.
  • Excellent communication and reporting skills, both written and oral.
  • Excellent time management and the ability to prioritize a heavy workload under pressure.
  • Willingness to work in demanding, stressful, and, at times, dangerous situations under difficult living conditions with respect for basic security rules.
  • Psychological resilience and a sense of humor.
  • Ability to communicate in Sango an asset.
INTERNEWS IN CAR:
Founded in December 2010 following an Internews training, the RJDH is a locally-led and locally-run organization that works closely with community radio stations’ staff and local correspondents across the country to collect and disseminate information from and back to those same stations on a daily basis via mobile phones, an e-newsletter, their website ( www.rjdh-rca.net ), Facebook ( www.facebook.com/RJDHRCA?fref=ts ) and Twitter (@RJDH_RCA).
