Deputy Chief of Party and Natural Resource and Environmental Management Specialist

Position Summary:
SNV seeks a Deputy Chief of Party and Natural Resource and Environmental Management Specialist for an anticipated USAID-funded, agriculture and natural resource management project in Northern Ghana. The goal of the program is to improve the livelihoods of rural communities and households through a holistic approach that focuses on increased revenue for rural populations from natural resource products, increased farmer access to land and natural resources, food security and nutrition, and enhanced environmental stewardship.

The DCOP/NRM specialist will support the Chief of Party in assigned duties and specifically those tasks related to the improved management and conservation of selected watersheds and biodiversity corridors in the Volta Basin and the strengthening of ecosystem services. He/she will be responsible for promoting community based natural resource management and facilitating cross border coordination and better protection and management of the corridors. He/she will ensure that the project meets all USAID environmental requirements and complies with USAID environmental policies and regulations.
Primary responsibilities will also include conducting an ecosystem valuation study, developing a primary baseline of carbon stocks, and providing material and technical support and maintaining consistent communication exchange with the Peace Corp environmental education program in the targeted areas.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree or higher in Natural Resource Management or related field.
- Minimum of 7 years of professional experience in building relations with rural communities through the extension of technologies, participatory planning, training and monitoring. Demonstrated success in using CBNRM and related best practices for improving livelihoods and enhancing the management of natural areas. Experience in building capacity of public agency personnel to more effectively meet the requirements of their position, preferably in Ghana or West Africa.
- Experience in the environmental compliance on projects and working with host country agencies.
- Protected area management experience.
- Experience with implementing project level climate change adaptation and mitigation technologies.
- M&E experience for NRM and environment projects.
- At least three (3) years of progressively responsible supervisory experience, including; direct supervision of professional and support staff, quality evaluation of staff performance and deliverables.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to hold staff accountable for doing their jobs.
Other Qualifications:
- Fluency in English required, knowledge of local languages highly desired.
- Excellent oral and writing skills.
- Ability to interact regularly and professionally across cultures and languages.
- Strong interpersonal and team building skills
- Demonstrated organizational skills and strong track record in meeting deliverables and deadlines
- Extensive experience in Ghana (local candidates strongly encouraged to apply).
