Internship: Research and Advocacy Programme on Minority Rights and Conflict Prevention

by Unknown  |  at  3:27 AM

The main focus of this internship will be desk research and linked conversations with key experts on each situation by email and phone into the participation of representatives of minority/indigenous communities in peace processes. The research will inform the selection of case study countries for a proposed project investigating relationships between the extent and nature of minority or indigenous inclusion in peace processes, the content of peace agreements and the sustainability of ensuing peace. The aim of the project is to generate knowledge and lessons for international and national actors to help them more effectively support the participation and representation of minority/indigenous needs and interests in peace processes.
The intern will be required to undertake the following tasks in relation to a select number of situations which have already been identified as of potential interest:
  • Review existing databases of peace agreements to analyse documentary provisions and assess their relevance for minorities/indigenous peoples.
  • Review data sources including academic and ‘grey’ literature for information regarding the dynamics of the conflict, the relevance of minority/indigenous issues as a ‘driver’ of conflict and the involvement of representatives of minority/indigenous communities in the peace process.
  • Identify key contacts to approach for further information, draft e-mails and follow up with Skype conversations, where possible.
  • Provide a synopsis of key findings for each case.
Essential skills/experience:
  • Understanding of conflict issues
  • Understanding of human rights including minority rights
  • Good communication skills, able to reach out to strangers persuasively and ensure busy people make time in schedules to respond
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Ability to review large quantities of information and condense into precise documents
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • Very good English language skills
Desirable skills/experience:
  • Good understanding of French, Spanish or Russian would be an advantage
  • Experience of using databases
This is a full time home-based assignment for a fixed period of 4 weeks. We envisage that the intern would start work early in December and complete the work early in January
Please note that expenses are not payable to home based interns although the costs of essential phone/skype calls will be reimbursed.

HOW TO APPLY:
