Organizational Summary
As part of the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) is at the nexus of practice, policy and learning in peacebuilding and human rights. The institute works in the field with local partner organizations in conflict-affected countries, bringing together civil society, governments, the security sector and human rights advocates to address the inequalities that fuel conflict to find paths to sustainable peace. Through dialogue, training in conflict resolution, negotiations and policy advocacy, the institute encourages local communities to come together and take the lead in preventing and ending cycles of violence
Position Summary
The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice is seeking a part-time intern to conduct and compile research and provide guidance and support for monthly youth forums and publications produced by high school students, focused on global topics. The intern's primary responsibility is to assist Senior Program Officer Debbie Martinez with research and support for the WorldLink high school internship program.
Entering its 20th year World Link is one of the IPJ’s flagship programs. A year-round program, WorldLink connects high school students from Southern California and Baja Mexico from all socioeconomic levels with experts, academics and practitioners of peacebuilding and human rights. Each year through World Link, more than 2,000 students evaluate ideas, add their voices to public discourse and help generate solutions through year-round activities in the form of research, public speaking, journalism and internship opportunities. Through WorldLink’s innovative and experiential focus on global education, students learn about issues facing us locally and internationally, and engage in thoughtful discussions about solutions in a forum where their voices are heard and valued.
Specific duties include:
- Reviewing and analyzing student-selected topics, including but not limited to human rights and conflict resolution
- Helping coordinate the implementation of student-selected global topics into semester events and activities
- Working closely with high school students and providing support to their respective projects in research, journalism, photography and video production
This unpaid internship will be 20 hrs/wk in the IPJ offices.
Qualifications
- Strong research and writing skills
- Experience with working with high school youth
- Experience with coordinating events and facilitating group discussions
- Attention to detail
- Demonstrated interest in human rights and conflict resolution
Learning Outcomes
- Development of research, writing and critical thinking skills, with guidance and support from WorldLink senior program officer
- Practical experience in working closely with high school youth
- Exposure and opportunity to connect with the IPJ and WorldLink's network
