Organizational Summary
As part of the University of San Diego's Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies, the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) is at the nexus of practice, policy and learning in peacebuilding and human rights. The institute works in the field with local partner organizations in conflict-affected countries, bringing together civil society, governments, the security sector and human rights advocates to address the inequalities that fuel conflict to find paths to sustainable peace. Through dialogue, training in conflict resolution, negotiations and policy advocacy, the institute encourages local communities to come together and take the lead in preventing and ending cycles of violence.
Position Summary
The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ) is seeking a part-time editorial intern in the fall semester to work on the production of online and print publications. The institute produces a variety of publications on its work and the field of peace and justice, including Narratives of Women PeaceMakers; Reports (including summaries, case studies and policy recommendations) from international conferences and field projects; Booklets from the Distinguished Lecture Series; the Compass Newsletter, which appears twice a year; and the Peace and Justice Blog. The editorial intern for Spring 2016 will be working primarily on curating a published compilation based on the institute’s Distinguished Lecture Series.
Specific responsibilities will include:
- Selecting excerpts from previous IPJ Distinguished Lectures and interviews to be included in a book scheduled for publication in 2016;
- Identifying photos and images appropriate for inclusion in the book;
- Drafting and/or proofreading articles for various venues, including the IPJ’s Compass Newsletter, Peace and Justice Blog and weekly News Briefs to be highlighted on the front page of the website;
- Assisting in the maintenance of the production schedule of the IPJ’s Spring issue of the Compass Newsletter;
- Reviewing proofs of publications during the design phase;
- Other administrative tasks as necessary.
This unpaid internship will be 20 hours per week in the IPJ offices. Hours worked are flexible to accommodate a student schedule.
Qualifications:
- Interest in and knowledge of communications and research as they relate to international peacebuilding and human rights;
- Excellent writing, editing, research and analytic skills;
- Meticulous attention to detail and well-organized;
- Strong interpersonal skills and experience working in an intercultural environment;
- Computer literacy; knowledge of photo-editing and design programs such as PhotoShop and InDesign a plus;
- Self-starter with the ability to work independently or in a team;
- Team player with a commitment to seeing a project through to successful conclusion;
- Strong administrative capabilities;
- Language skills a plus.
Learning Outcomes:
- Exposure to issues of peacebuilding and human rights, and the importance of the inclusion of youth and women in those issues;
- Development of editorial and writing skills, including knowledge of AP style and the University of San Diego’s branding and marketing guidelines, with guidance and support from IPJ editor;
- Understanding of the editorial and production process for both online and print publications, from concept to implementation to completion;
- Exposure and opportunity to connect with local and international organizations working in the same or similar fields, as well as writers, university communications staff, and local graphic designers and printers.
