Campaigner for Egypt and for Algeria & Morocco (2 positions) - Tunis Regional Office
Amnesty International has shifted its centralized International Secretariat (IS) into a more strong, coherent and visible presence in strategic locations in the global South.
In the Middle East and North Africa, we are developing a stronger presence, with a regional office for the Middle East based in Beirut and one for North Africa based in Tunis. The overall aim is that we have de-concentrated key functions to enhance our research and campaign capacity. Being closer to the ground is enabling us to operate with greater speed and relevance and to be more agile and responsible to the demands of our human rights agenda.
Amnesty International's new office in Tunisia is looking for two experienced Campaigners, one for our Egypt focus and the other for Algeria & Morocco, to act as catalysts to mobilize our Amnesty International's worldwide membership in support to human rights campaigns in the region, particularly to promote the rights of victims of armed conflict, to end violence against women, to ensure Economic, Social and Cultural rights, to promote respect for Indigenous People's rights, and to address the increasing levels of violence against human rights defenders, among other important issues.
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a research-based campaigning organization, building strong strategies for action to engage and mobilize our members, activists and partners is fundamental to achieve our goals and long-lasting strategies for change. Whether we are addressing restrictions on freedom of expression, or violations of the rights of Indigenous people, or denouncing sexual violence against women, our campaigns make a difference. You will contribute to deliver powerful global, regional and national campaigns that inspire people to act and protect human rights defenders.
Our Campaigners will work in close collaboration with Researchers and other programme teams, as well as with sections, to launch campaigns for action by developing innovative campaign tactics and techniques, capitalising on communications and social media channels, and identifying and fostering opportunities for partnership and collaboration with other social and human rights movements and communities addressing issues affecting people in Egypt or Algeria and Morocco.
ABOUT YOU
With experience of working on human rights issues, you must have first-hand in-depth knowledge and experience of the socio-political and economic context in either of the country-focuses, in regional and in global human rights trends. You have substantial experience of strategic human rights campaigning, including knowledge of the steps required to devise campaigning. You must also have experience and an understanding of membership organizations, and the capability both to work on your own initiative and as a member of a large and diverse team, often under pressure.
Your background in activism, academia, social science, or communication with the ability to identify opportunities to ensure our voice has authority. You have strong knowledge of and experience working to address human rights issues in the region and familiarity with international human rights frameworks. With your extensive experience of working from the region, you have a strong network and rich experience of undertaking this kind of sensitive work in the field. A natural collaborator, you need influential communication skills, impartial political judgement, coupled with strong strategic thought. You have excellent written and verbal Arabic, French and English.
