Rebuilding tropical fisheries with coastal communities
Blue Ventures develops transformative approaches for nurturing and sustaining locally led marine conservation through an integrated approach addressing health and environmental issues. We work in places where the ocean is vital to local cultures and economies, and we are committed to protecting marine biodiversity in ways that benefit coastal people.
Initiatives include supporting locally-managed marine areas (LMMAs), developing community-based aquaculture programmes aimed at providing alternative livelihoods for local fishers, establishing reproductive health programmes to address unmet need for family planning and other health services in remote coastal communities, and leading coastal forestry initiatives aimed at creating new systems for mangrove forest management and financing. Blue Ventures develops these conservation ‘models’ at four sites in western Madagascar, and works with partners both in Madagascar and worldwide to support their replication.
Summary Job Description
Mangroves are a vital ecosystem for both coastal communities and inshore fisheries across the tropics, including in Madagascar. Through its Blue Forests programme, Blue Ventures is developing innovative models to support locally-led mangrove management. Central to this programme is the pioneering development of community-centric ‘blue carbon’ projects, with the aim of harnessing the extraordinary amount of carbon sequestered by mangroves, along with the voluntary carbon market, to incentivise and fund LMMAs. Underpinning these blue carbon projects and all of Blue Ventures’ mangrove initiatives are sustainable, community-led mangrove forest management and alternative livelihoods that ease local dependence on mangrove resources.
Based in either Antananarivo or Toliara, with extensive travel to Blue Ventures’ three mangrove field sites, the Blue Forests Madagascar Programme Manager will be responsible for overseeing all Blue Forests activities in Madagascar, working with local staff to support communities to sustainably manage their mangroves, as well as ensuring the two blue carbon projects in Madagascar are being effectively developed and implemented. They will be line managed by the Conservation Programme Manager (UK) while working closely with the global Blue Forests Programme Manager, Site Leaders and field staff, as well as the Madagascar Country Director. They will also work closely with the technical managers of Blue Ventures’ Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture programmes, to ensure the continued successful integrated development of mangrove fisheries and aquaculture models. The role will involve the line management of one Project Coordinator, as well as partnership engagement with key mangrove stakeholders in Madagascar, including NGOs and government bodies.
