Communications Officer

The Communications Officer works closely with the Director of Communications to design and implement IWHC’s communications strategy, with a focus on content, accuracy, consistency, and dissemination of persuasive, evidence-based materials and messages to IWHC’s key audiences.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
External Writing and Communications
  • Edit and write content on sexual and reproductive health and rights for IWHC’s online and print publications, including blog, e-newsletter, research reports, fact sheets, and other communications materials as needed.
  • Research, draft, edit, and/or submit IWHC articles to technical publications and peer-reviewed journals. Seek out opportunities for IWHC article submissions.
  • Conceive and coordinate drafting, editing, and production of IWHC publications in a consistent, timely, cost-effective, and attractive way.
  • Provide strategic input to graphic designers and printers on visual design and production of IWHC publications.
  • Develop clear, consistent, and vivid content for speeches, interviews, op-eds, talking points, donor correspondence and appeals, annual reports, invitations, and web content.
Media Outreach
  • Assist the Director of Communications on the conceptualization and implementation of IWHC’s media strategy, including new media and social media.
  • Identify opportunities for news coverage of IWHC issues, cultivate media contacts, and pitch reporters and editors.
  • Draft and edit press releases, op-eds, commentaries, letters-to-the-editor, and blog submissions to strategic media outlets and influential blogs.
News Monitoring and Analysis
  • Monitor media coverage of sexual and reproductive health and rights issues, and proactively suggest topics for potential stories on IWHC communications platforms.
  • Manage news monitoring service accounts for print and broadcast coverage of IWHC, its leaders, and key partners.
  • Distribute important news and technical articles to relevant staff.
Internal Communications and Capacity-Building
  • Support and assist with media and communications trainings for IWHC staff and partners.
  • Draft guidance and tips for staff and grantees on effective writing across diverse styles, such as blogs, editorials, and peer-reviewed articles.
  • Update IWHC editorial and style guide to ensure accuracy and consistency of brand in written communications.
  • Create and maintain “story bank” of compelling IWHC and partner stories to be used by IWHC staff and Board.
Other Communications Support
  • Work in partnership with Communications, Development, and Program staff to develop and execute social media campaigns to advance advocacy and fundraising goals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Exceptional writing, editing, research, and proofing skills: above all, you must be a great, readable, and compelling writer.
  • Passion for IWHC’s mission and a strong commitment to sexual and reproductive rights and health, human rights, and gender equality.
  • At least five to seven years professional experience in strategic communications, preferably with nonprofits.
  • Ability to write in diverse styles for different audiences and across mediums, including research and technical journals, blogs, mainstream news media, and social media.
  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in English, Communication, Journalism, or related field.
  • Ability to think creatively and “out of the box.”
  • Demonstrated writing and editing skills, including publication in peer-reviewed or technical journals.
  • Demonstrated ability to work under tight deadlines and maintain a flexible work manner and schedule.
  • Web savvy.
  • Ability to assess priorities, manage a variety of activities in a time-sensitive environment, and meet deadlines with attention to detail and quality.
  • Must be a team player with a sense of humor, friendly demeanor, and ability to inspire colleagues.
  • Strong time-management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent listening and communications skills, with sensitivity to cultural communication differences and the ability to communicate directly and effectively with others.
  • In Design skills and experience using a CMS a plus.
  • Proficiency in French, Spanish, or Portuguese is preferred, but not required.
COMPENSATION: Highly competitive salary and excellent benefits, including generous vacation time, and no contribution for employee-only medical and dental coverage, among others.
