Saheli services include: education and advocacy for the prevention of domestic violence, promotion of physical and mental health and safety, referrals for legal and immigration issues, career and economic empowerment, and social and cultural volunteer opportunities. We are a lean organization, run by a working board, many other volunteers and three part time staff members.
Saheli seeks a part-time Communications & Social Media Intern to manage the website, assist with the quarterly newsletter, manage several e-groups, promote Saheli on Facebook and Twitter and general communications. In additional to strong technological, social media, writing and marketing skills, ideally the candidate has a background in—and passion for— gender, social work, preventing violence against women and working with survivors, and/or community development.
Responsibilities include:
- Updating Saheli’s website, events calendar and blog on a bi-weekly basis (WordPress)
- Keeping Saheli’s social media presence active (Facebook)
- Designing and coordinating the quarterly newsletter (Mailchimp) and managing the email databases
- Moderating the SaheliBoston Google Group on a daily basis (5-10 emails/week)
- Helping to publicize Saheli events to local media outlets and partner organizations
- Keep Saheli Board abreast of issues related to domestic violence and women in New England, the US and South Asia
- Keep Saheli Board abreast of relevant events and initiatives in New England
Criteria for selection:
- Experience in website management and writing for web audiences
- Knowledge of WordPress, some HTML, email marketing, social media, Google Groups, and database management
- Proof-reading and editing experience
- Excellent writing skills
- Ability to work independently and proactively without close supervision at all times
- Grace under pressure and tolerance for ambiguity
- Detail and deadline-oriented work ethic
The position will require 10-12 hours/wk.
This is an unpaid internship; however, we will happily provide reference letters, opportunities for professional networking, and academic credit (on a case-by-case basis, subject to your academic institution’s approval). Saheli usually rewards good interns with a stipend or cash gift at the end of the internship.
Although most of the work of the intern will be completed remotely, we are ideally seeking a candidate who will meet with a Saheli board member at least once a month at a place accessible by the T and attend Saheli’s monthly board meetings on the second Saturday of each month in Burlington, MA. (Accessible by public transport). Remote applicants will also be considered.
