Director of the Malawi/Liverpool/Wellcome (MLW) Programme

We are searching for an outstanding clinical scientist to lead the Wellcome Trust funded MLW programme in Blantyre, Malawi. The Director will be responsible for leading scientific strategy and overseeing management and governance of the MLW programme. The post holder will have his/her own focused area of internationally competitive relevant research. He/she will ensure the continued success of the MLW programme in undertaking research of international quality, training young scientists and making an impact on health policy.
The MLW (Malawi- Liverpool- Wellcome Trust) programme was founded in 1995 and is one of five Wellcome Trust funded Major Overseas Programmes. The programme is a partnership between the College of Medicine in Blantyre, Malawi, the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, the University of Liverpool and the Wellcome Trust. It undertakes high quality hospital and community based research into the major diseases affecting Malawi and encompasses a spectrum of research from laboratory science through to social science and health systems research. Research is supported by core funding from the Wellcome Trust and multiple grants from a variety of other funders.
The Director will be expected to be medically qualified, to have a postgraduate research degree and to have extensive research experience in diseases that are priorities in lower and middle income countries. He/she should have also have experience of high level leadership and experience of working in a low resource setting is also important. An interest in training and capacity strengthening would also be welcomed
The successful applicant will hold a Chair appointment in the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine but would be based in Malawi. Salaries will be on the LSTM clinical scale and a competitive benefits package will be included.
