Africa Program Officer

Child Soldiers International (CSI) is seeking to recruit a human rights researcher and advocate, to support the organisation’s work in Africa to end the military recruitment and use of children. This is initially a one year fixed term post.
Full time fixed-term contract:June 2015 – May 2016
Salary:From £34,633 to £40,603 per annum, depending on experience.
Benefits: From 1 June 2016 eligible for a pension contribution by Child Soldiers International equal to 3% of salary.
Location: The post is based at CSI’s office in London Bridge. Overseas travel will be required.
Essential requirements: Fluency in English and French, and the right to work in the UK. (Please do not apply if you do not meet these requirements.)
Responsibilities:
· Under the supervision of the Africa Program Manager, support the development and implementation of CSI’s work in Africa. This will include the strengthening of existing work in Chad and the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the development of new work in Central African Republic.
· Monitor, document and analyse developments concerning child soldier issues and related human rights concerns in CSI’s focus countries and across the Africa region; monitor relevant political, security and human rights developments, analysing information from UN agencies, national and international NGOs, governments, media and civil society.
· Work closely with expert consultants who will support the acquisition of country-specific expertise on child rights and child protection issues to feed into CSI’s strategies.
· Organise and conduct regular travel to Africa and conduct regular advocacy missions to Geneva and New York.
· Identify, develop and mobilise strategic partnerships and constituencies to support CSI’s work in specific countries and at the international level. Develop and maintain strategic contacts with NGOs, UN agencies, governments and think tanks.
· Research, draft and edit reports, briefings, press releases, and other advocacy and awareness-raising materials.
· Work with CSI’s fundraising team to secure funding for regional program activities and to support donor reporting requirements.
· Perform all necessary administrative tasks to ensure effective self-servicing and the organizational development of CSI as appropriate.
Essential criteria:
· Permission to work in the UK
· Fluency in both French and English
· Demonstrable experience in human rights research and advocacy
· In-country experience of human rights and/or humanitarian work
· Degree in a relevant subject (international relations, law, human rights) and demonstrable understanding of the international human rights framework
· Excellent oral and written language and communication skills
· Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to work in a team, to support colleagues and work with partner organizations
· Willingness to show initiative, and to undertake administrative and support tasks
Desirable criteria:
· Knowledge of the children and armed conflict legal framework and mechanisms
· In-country work experience in the Africa region
· Ability to use print and broadcast media for advocacy purposes
· Arabic language skills
