Job Description
Supports Senior Fellows with research relating to issues of policies and trends affecting developing countries including poverty, fragile states, foreign assistance, development financing including climate and infrastructure finance, middle class, transparency, global governance and the role of International Financial Institutions (IFIs), helps obtain, manage, organize, and analyze large datasets on these issues, assists in the preparation of presentations, blog posts and working papers, aides in the organization of meetings and events,assists with outreach activities related to the Senior Fellows’ work and, as needed, provides administrative assistance.
Job Responsibilities
90% Research Assistance
- Conducts empirical research and policy analysis on topics related to sustainable growth and poverty reduction in developing countries including development finance; the role and effectiveness of related development and donor institutions; governance and transparency; as well as, related sectoral issues particularly infrastructure and urban development.
- Collects, assembles, and maintains datasets for quantitative analysis utilizing econometric and other statistical tools; compiles and organizes large datasets; writes code in STATA and other statistical software to operationalize analysis-methodologies; and presents the results of empirical analysis in table and graphical formats to complement Microsoft (MS) PowerPoint presentations and published material.
- Collects and analyzes empirical and analytical information; monitors and analyzes relevant material from conferences and seminars, academic journals, policy analysis papers, public opinion polls, and reports from a wide variety of sources, including development organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs).
- Writes background policy and researches summary notes and reports, occasional media summaries, and briefing memos, reports on forums, symposia, and conferences; compiles abstracts, summaries, and analyses of journals, books, and news articles. Maintains electronic bibliography files.
- Assists with preliminary drafting and editing of manuscripts, remarks, etc. Verifies factual entries in manuscripts. Reviews and updates existing data and footnotes.
- Attends conferences and seminars as needed and prepares summaries.
- Collaborates with other research staff as needed.
10% General Assistance
- Contributes to grant-writing activities, in coordination with program staff and Senior Fellows.
- Facilitates manuscript communications and correspondence among chapter authors, editors, Brookings Press, and designated Senior Fellows.
- Assists with the organization of meetings and conferences related to the Fellows’ work, in collaboration with program staff.
- Writes and edits summaries to be posted on website pages relating to Scholars’ work.
- Other logistical duties as assigned.
Job Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s degree in an area of social sciences such as economics, finance, international relations, public policy or international development preferred). Minimum one year of experience with empirical research and quantitative data analysis. Experience handling large datasets and knowledge of STATA, SAS, and related econometric packages, required. Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel required. Experience working with governmental and non-governmental organizations on international development and economics issues is highly desirable. Background in international financial institutions (IFIs) or donor aid agencies such as DfID preferred.
Knowledge of development and/or international economics, applied statistics and econometrics preferred. Knowledge of international institutions in global governance, drivers of growth in developing and developed economies preferred. Excellent oral, written, and communication skills. Strong computer skills and experience required. Competence to undertake research assignments with minimal supervision. Ability to meet multiple deadlines in a fast-paced work environment. Professional demeanor and high level of comfort working with high-profile individuals from government/international organizations. Ability to work well under pressure with discretion and mature judgment.
