The INTASAVE-CARIBSAVE Group: an Overview

INTASAVE Africa is a regional not-for-profit organisation that innovates, connects and implements practical solutions for sustainable development and climate change. It is is part of The INTASAVE-CARIBSAVE Group (International Sectoral Approach to Vulnerability and ResiliencE), a global organisation with offices in Africa (Kenya and South Africa), Asia-Pacific (China and Malaysia), Europe (UK), Caribbean (Barbados and Jamaica) and has operations internationally. INTASAVE works across four areas:

1. Climate Change Science, Policy and Practice – we lead in developing new approaches across science, policy and practice, through our papers, pieces and policy recommendations. We commission, manage and undertake local, regional and large-scale development, Research into Use, policy research projects and planning processes in order to explore new approaches to climate challenges. We connect countries, communities and organisations with the innovative thinking and policy tools necessary to implement effective solutions to the impacts of climate change across South-South regions.
2. Low Carbon Development and Renewable Energy. Connecting socio-economic development concerns with the potential for green growth allows policy makers, organisations and citizens to develop together in sustainable ways. The transition from a carbon intensive economy to a green economy requires technological development and efficient use of renewable energy to become a reality. With massive amounts of untapped renewable energy, such as solar, in the developing countries across South-South regions, the INTASAVE-CARIBSAVE Group is working together with countries and communities to create new renewable energy solutions. These programmes also bring significant opportunities for livelihoods improvement, social and economic development and environmental protection.
3. Society and Sustainable Livelihoods –by protecting and enhancing the natural services that support livelihoods, vulnerable communities can maintain local safety nets and expand the range of options for coping with disruptive climate related events. We add value and play an important role in developing local understanding of behavioural impacts, as well as taking into account socio-political questions, which may shape people’s ability to adapt to climate change and other challenges. We provide capacity needs assessment, training and skills enhancement sessions and the development of action plans to evaluate and build institutional capacity, as well as supporting the deployment of alternative tools to enable communities to better conserve their carrying capacity. We work to understand how different vulnerabilities and economic characteristics play out in different areas and regions, and can be used to enable the implementation of sustainable practices both at the community level and in terms of global best practice.
4. Biodiversity, Eco-systems and Marine Conservation - The protection, conservation, sustainable management and utilisation of marine and forest resources are critically important to local and international stakeholders. The INTASAVE-CARIBSAVE Group helps develop and transmit innovative approaches, connecting knowledge between communities and supporting the implementation of conservation programmes and approaches. We also undertake capacity building of our partners with a view to promoting best practice and lesson learning in biodiversity, eco-systems and marine conservation.

Examples of current work include:

• Collaborative Adaptation Research Initiative in Africa and Asia: Adaptation at Scale in Semi-Arid Regions (ASSAR). This 5-year adaptation research initiative will deepen understanding of, and strengthen knowledge systems on, climate vulnerability and adaptation in semi-arid regions in Africa and Asia. It will help transform current adaptation practice to a mode that achieves proactive, widespread adaptation embedded in development activities at multiple governance scales, to advance adaptive livelihoods for vulnerable groups. INTASAVE is leading the knowledge management, learning exchange and transfer component (including research on climate adaptation communication barriers and enablers) as well as undertaking community-based vulnerability assessments and the development of local adaptation plans of action across all case study sites.
• Using Solar Nano-Grids to build resilient livelihoods in rural communities (SONG). This multidisciplinary research project, in Bangladesh and Kenya, is evaluating the potential of solar energy, using solar nano-grids, as a more effective means than traditional solar home systems to bring electricity to different types of rural communities so that basic electricity needs of the households are met, whilst at the same time incorporating some small-scale agricultural or industrial applications (like irrigation) that can boost livelihoods and income generating activities. The aim will be to develop effective business models for scaling up that also take into consideration country-specific contexts.
• Adapting to Climate Change in China (ACCC Phase II) which brings together Chinese policy makers, research and policy institutions, as well as international organizations and experts, to develop practical approaches to climate change adaptation policy planning. Building on the work of Phase I, Phase II of this project (2014-2017) aims to mainstream climate change adaptation into development policies at national and provincial levels; and support the formulation and implementation of integrated Provincial Adaptation Plans (PAPs) across priority sectors and share these experiences and lessons with other developing countries.
• The Caribbean Fish Sanctuaries Partnership Initiative (C-FISH) which aims to increase livelihood opportunities and resilience to climate change impacts in communities surrounding fish sanctuaries at 15 locations in 5 Caribbean states. The productivity of reef fisheries and value of marine resource for eco-tourism will also be increased. The project will establish a private-public partnership involving large companies in the tourism sector, governments, communities and regional institutions that will implement a framework of supporting activities and develop long-term financing mechanisms to support & encourage community-based co-managed fish sanctuaries that have been shown to increase 3 the productivity of reef biodiversity of coastal ecosystems and their resilience to climate change.
