Livestock Expert - Ebola Outbreak

In the framework of the FAO response to the epidemic of Ebola viral disease (EVD) in West Africa, under the administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in the country, in collaboration with the FAO Regional Office in Accra and the Regional Hub for Resilience, Emergencies and Rehabilitation in West Africa / Sahel in Dakar (REOWA), the incumbent will assist with aspects of knowledge and reducing the risk of inter-species transmission and spread of the Ebola virus program. To this end, he/she will perform the following tasks:
· Oversee the development and implementation of the restocking programme including:
o The type, quality and livestock health status of animals provided to beneficiaries
o The construction of shelters
o The provision of animal feed and veterinary drugs
o The implementation of vaccination campaigns
o The organization of trainings of beneficiaries and veterinary services
o The monitoring of the restocking programme
· Contribute to the formulation and implementation of the response programme to strengthen countries’ capacity and the general public awareness on preparedness planning, with a focus on environmental health as a key component of the One Health approach[1]
· Contribute to the establishment and strengthening of institutional and operational relationships with key stakeholders involved in the prevention and response to the EVD, either at central level (Central Veterinary Services, MoH, Ministry in charge of wildlife, WHO, UNICEF, etc.) and district level (veterinary and wildlife decentralized water and forestry services, health workers, NGOs) through participation in intersectoral meetings, joint organization of trainings, preparation, production and dissemination of educational and communication/social mobilization materials etc.
· Explore opportunities to link the restocking programme with nutrition educational aspects in order to develop "Nutrition sensitive" approaches;
· Take into consideration Gender approach and beneficiary accountability in the implementation of activities
· Perform any other duties upon request from the Head of the Regional Hub for Resilience, Emergencies and Rehabilitation in West Africa / Sahel or the FAO country Representative;
· Submit a report at the end of the mission
Education and relevant experience
Animal production specialist or Veterinarian with a specialization or proven (5 years) experience in implementing livestock production programmes. Professional experience in the country or sub-region is highly desirable.
Language skills
· Fluent in English or French and working knowledge of the other language
Other competencies
· Proficiency in computer skills and current use of the Internet
· Ability to work in a multidisciplinary team and multicultural environment;
· Women are encouraged to apply;
Experience within FAO is an asset
