Statistician - Ebola outbreak

Duty Station: Freetown, Sierra Leone / Monrovia, Liberia / Conakry, Guinea (according to needs)
In the framework of the FAO response to the epidemic of Ebola viral disease (EVD) in West Africa, under the administrative supervision of the FAO Representative in the country, in collaboration with the FAO Regional Office in Accra and the Regional Hub for Resilience, Emergencies and Rehabilitation in West Africa / Sahel in Dakar (REOWA), the incumbent will contribute to the implementation of the programme of work in statistics in agriculture/food security, including methodology, data collection, validation, dissemination and capacity development. In particular, S/he will:
· develop and maintain methods and procedures for the collection, validation, consistency analysis, editing and dissemination of statistics related to agricultural and food security statistics with emphasis on data quality, coverage and timeliness;
· contribute to the revision of the methodology for statistics/indicators and accounts and the estimation of various elements contained therein;
· contribute to the development and maintenance of statistical programs/software for the processing and analysis of large, multi-dimensional data sets in agricultural and food security statistics;
· contribute to relevant new procedures, concepts, definitions, standards and statistical methods and conduct analyses and projections related to food and agricultural statistics;
· coordinate training courses and workshops to support capacity to disseminate agricultural and food security statistics and provide relevant data to international organizations; develop supporting documentation and training materials; participate in missions to counties, as necessary;
· prepare technical papers for discussion and publication;
· contribute to the preparation and support of intergovernmental and international meetings and attend, when requested, on behalf of FAO;
· perform other related duties as required.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
Candidates should meet the following:
· Advanced University degree in statistics, economics, or closely related field;
· Five years of relevant experience in national or international organizations in the collection, compilation, validation and analysis of food and agricultural or environmental statistics;
· Fluent in English or French and working knowledge of the other language.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Candidates will be assessed against the following:
· Extent and relevance of experience in the compilation, validation and analysis of environmental statistics in national or international organizations
· Level of knowledge of the main data sources used for the compilation of environmental statistics
· Extent of experience in the use of statistical software (e.g. R, SAS, STATA, SPSS)
· Excellent analytical, writing and communications skills, and ability to conduct independent research, to prepare papers and documents of a high professional standard and to present statistical materials lucidly and effectively
· Work experience in more than one location or area of work, particularly in field positions is desirable
· Extent of experience in working effectively in multidisciplinary teams
Please note that all candidates should possess computer/word processing skills and should be capable of working with people of different national and cultural backgrounds.
* The length of appointment for internal FAO candidates will be established in accordance with applicable policies pertaining to the extension of appointments
