BTCA Liaison Volunteer

Job Summary Education and development NGO Peace Child International (PCI) is looking for International Volunteers to support the work of its partner in Liberia, focusing mainly on several administrative tasks as described below, including the training of trainers, mentorship, conducting M&E and reporting and also helping to monitor and implement the BTCA Expansion project, including a donor conference and the development of a BTCA Job and Enterprise Creation Strategy for Post-Ebola Economic Reconstruction efforts in Liberia. The International Volunteer Trainer/Administrative Support Staff will be provided with accommodation, food and a stipend.
Youth Crime Watch of Liberia runs the Be The Change Academy in Paynesville, Liberia. This programme, designed and delivered in partnership with Peace Child International, was originally piloted in Kenya, and seeks out disadvantaged young women with the germ of a business idea. It then trains and mentors them to start and/or build on a viable business plan. The best of these plans then receives funding from the BTCA’s revolving loan fund.
This is an exciting opportunity for anyone with some business knowledge and management experience with an interest in youth development, gender empowerment, NGOs and/or international development. Currently, the BTCA is scaling up with an expansion plan that aims to go nationwide, beginning with three counties and targeting 1,000 additional young women from the BTCA programme at six training sites across Liberia.
Responsibilities As the BTCA Liaison Volunteer, you would be providing support for the overall implementation of the Be The Change Academy, including its three new sites across Liberia. With the guidance of the BTCA Manager and under the supervision of the Programme Manager, the Liaison Volunteer will perform the necessary tasks, as assigned herein, for the purpose of supporting the successful delivery of both the BTCA Paynesville but also the BTCA expansion projects, including a donor conference and the development of a BTCA Job and Enterprise Creation Strategy for Post-Ebola Economic Reconstruction efforts in Liberia and the region. Tasks include:
  • Management Support
  • Support the BTCA Manager to ensure that that deadlines set for different components of the project are met as planned;
  • Take photographs and write blogs and journals on the project for communications purposes;
  • Research and find out best practice from other local enterprise training and/or microfinance enterprise creation organisations;
  • Assist YCWL to develop a BTCA Job and Enterprise Creation Strategy for Post-Ebola Economic Reconstruction.
  • Conduct M&E
  • Be actively involved with conducting accurate base-line assessments of the trainees skills and competencies;
  • Execute the monitoring & evaluation and certification processes, setting up reliable control groups.
  • Networking and Fundraising
  • Support efforts by Youth Crime Watch to work with government and donor officials to secure continuity funding to support ongoing BTCA trainings;
  • Support efforts already underway by YCWL to Work with government and donor officials to develop and implement the 2015 donor/ graduation conference;
  • Write letters and proposals, make phone calls, do pitches with other staff and volunteers to secure new local funding for the BTCA.
  • Conduct Reporting
  • Work with trainers to draw up Weekly and Monthly activity reports, experiences from the field and recommendations;
  • Assist in the preparation of accounts/ budgets and weekly reports to the Programme Manager for onward submission to PCI.
  • Support Training Activities
  • Support planning and execution of the BTCA workshops;
  • Training of Trainers and Supporting in classroom monitoring in each training location;
  • Support routine review and adaptation of existing training manual into a locally appropriate one.
Required skills
  • Degree in business studies, or social sciences desirable; experience in writing business plans is an advantage.
  • Business/entrepreneurial background; some teaching/facilitation experience.
  • Experience in or enthusiasm for working with young disadvantaged women, youth and/or communities
The International Volunteers should possess competent IT skills or must be able to use the basic applications required to perform the tasks above. They must also be flexible and adaptable with the ability to learn from and share with others.
