Area Coordinator

Contract duration: 2 years (subject to funding)
The Area Coordinator (AC) is responsible for leading and managing a Tearfund project team. As the senior representative for Tearfund in the project location, the AC is responsible for representation to the local authorities, and for coordination with programme directors in Khartoum, as well as other NGOs and UN agencies. The AC is responsible for project management and the implementation of programme quality and accountability commitments and for ensuring Tearfund policies and procedures are adhered to by staff. As a member of the programme’s Senior Management Team the AC contributes to strategic decision making and shaping of the overall strategy for the programme.
Tearfund has been operational in Darfur since 2004, working in areas affected by conflict and chronic vulnerability. Tearfund has focused on work in a range of sectors including Nutrition, Public Health Education, including Child-Focused Health Education, Water and Sanitation, Food Security/Livelihoods, Education and Community Development.
The successful applicant will have significant experience managing relief programmes in complex operating environments, with an excellent understanding of conflict and gender sensitive programming, and a proven ability to build relationships with a range of stakeholders. They will also be experienced at managing the transition into new project areas, overseeing needs assessments and evaluations, and in ensuring a high level programme quality and adherence to relevant international standards. They will possess excellent cross-cultural communication skills and be willing to contribute significantly to institutional donor proposals. Experience in Sudan and some knowledge of Arabic is also beneficial but not essential.
Applicants must be in sympathy with Tearfund’s Christian beliefs. All posts involve potential contact with children and the recruitment process will include specific checks related to safe-guarding issues.
