Amnesty International is shifting its centralized International Secretariat (IS) into a more strong, coherent and visible presence in strategic locations in the global South.
 
In the Americas, we are developing a stronger presence by opening a regional office in Mexico City and de-concentrating some of the functions we currently base in the International Secretariat office in London, including our human rights education capacity. Being closer to the ground will enable us to operate with greater speed and relevance and to be more agile and responsible to the demands of our human rights agenda.
 
Amnesty International’s Regional Office is looking for an experienced Human Rights Education Coordinator to coordinate and manage the development and implementation of regional, and where appropriate, national human rights education strategies, plans and projects in the Americas.
 
ABOUT THE ROLE:
 
Access to human rights education creates the foundation for a rights respecting society, for (re)claiming rights. It underpins Amnesty’s human rights work.
 
You will contribute to the development of global, regional and national HRE plans, strategies and projects, coordinate the implementation of human rights education work online and offline, ensure the alignment with global and regional campaigns, contribute the human rights education perspective in the region to internal AI policies, approaches, strategies, activism and research.
 
You will provide advice and capacity building support to sections, structures and other Amnesty International entities within the region in order to deliver effective human rights education, programming and practice and methodology. Influencing standard setting/ policy to promote the right to human rights education and advocate for human rights education and access to human rights education on the regional level. Your will raise the visibility of human rights education work, methodology sharing, promoting impact of human rights education within and outside the organization. Learn from experiences to improve the work; ensure internal and external accountability of the resources used and the results obtained; Prove the contribution of human rights education to change; Develop identifying and share innovative human rights education projects. Identify and conceptualize human rights education work with potential for successful fundraising, provide and present human rights education work in a way that helps to attract donors.
 
ABOUT YOU:
 
With experience of working in human rights education, you must have first-hand in-depth knowledge and experience of the socio-political and economic context as well as experience of formal and non-formal educational structures and environments in the region and global human rights education trends.
 
You have substantial experience of developing strategies for human rights education as well as conducting human rights education programmes and projects. You must also have experience and an understanding of membership organizations, and the capability both to work on your own initiative and as a member of a large and diverse team, often under pressure. Experience in working in a matrix management structure is advantageous.
 
You have background in human rights education with the ability to identify opportunities to ensure impactful work in this field. You have demonstrated understanding of human rights education methodology, including Education Technology and its implications. Understanding of a participative approach and experience-based learning Awareness of the implications of cultural diversity for effective delivery of training programmes.
 
With your extensive experience of working from the Americas region, you have a strong network and rich experience of undertaking this kind of work in the field. As a human rights educator you need the ability to develop visions, objectives and strategies to achieve goals of the human rights education programme. Ability to inspire others to contribute to the set goals and objectives. Ability to assess changing situations and to offer strategic direction in new contexts. Ability to lead, influence and persuade own teams, colleagues and partners within and outside Amnesty to contribute to the set goals.
 
Demonstrated ability to analyse complex global and regional situations in order to determine information needed; identify key stakeholders, alternative courses of action; impact of specific decisions and to devise creative solutions based on findings.
 
You have excellent written and verbal Spanish and English. French and/or Portuguese language skills will be an asset.
