About

The International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI) is a global not-for-profit organization whose mission is to ensure the development of a safe, effective, accessible, preventive HIV vaccine for use throughout the world where people need it most, including men who have sex with men (MSM), sex workers, adolescents and women. Founded in 1996, IAVI works with more than 40 partners in 25 countries to research, design and develop AIDS vaccine candidates. IAVI has offices in the United States, Europe, Africa and India.
The organization also conducts policy analysis and serves as an advocate for the AIDS vaccine field. It supports a comprehensive approach to addressing HIV and AIDS that balances the expansion and strengthening of existing HIV prevention and treatment programs with targeted investments in the design and development of new tools to prevent HIV. Today, IAVI is a fully integrated vaccine development effort with partners in Africa and around the globe.  

Position Overview

We are seeking a Communications Officer based in New York City with strong communications and social media skills, who will be a key member of the Global Communications team, contributing to the Communications implementation plan.  Working in close collaboration with colleagues across IAVI’s departments and regions (US, Europe, India and Africa) as well as external stakeholders, the Global Communications team provides strategic and tactical support to IAVI’s research and development, advocacy and policy, and resource mobilization teams, as well as to the CEO and other senior executives.
The Communications Officer will help tell IAVI’s story to internal and external audiences, including media, and translate what is often complicated research outcomes in meaningful ways for a general audience.  S/he will develop compelling content for print, digital and social media platforms, with specific emphasis on the IAVI website.  The content will also focus on relevant case studies, briefing documents, fact sheets, press releases and commentaries/op-eds for Global Communications.  The Communications Officer will also work with the VP for External Relations to implement targeted media outreach engaging with IAVI colleagues in US, Europe, India and Africa.  

Responsibilities

  • Create compelling content for IAVI’s website appropriate for multiple audiences
  • Contribute to communications strategies and implementation, including compelling and targeted messaging that works in concert with visuals to engage diverse audiences
  • Develop and write case studies, op-eds, press releases/statements, FAQs, briefing documents, brochures/fact sheets, etc., for IAVI Global Communications and social media
  • Develop and update key communications collateral materials, such as advocacy briefs, human interest stories, conference posters, interviews with key stakeholders, and external presentations for Senior IAVI Staff
  • Conduct media outreach

Required Skills and Experience

  • Ability to quickly translate complex and technical subject matter into compelling content in simple language for a wide range of audiences and vehicles
  • Excellent oral and written English language skills
  • Experience writing and producing content for websites and other channels of communication
  • Knowledge and understanding of public health essential
  • Strong knowledge of print, web-based, digital and social media platforms. Knowledge of Photoshop a plus
  • Organized and detail oriented
  • Flexibility and ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment

Fellowship Logistics

During the fellowship year, all fellows are provided with:
  • A pre-tax living stipend of $1100/month
  • Housing and utilities
  • Health insurance
  • A professional development grant of $600
  • An award of $1500 upon successful completion of the fellowship year
  • Travel costs covered to and from placement site, training and retreats
Living and Working in the United States: Fellows are provided with housing and utilities during the fellowship year. Housing arrangements vary based on location within the country. Fellows placed at IAVI will live with other fellows in a furnished apartment in New York City, New York, an urban center.
